The Clwyd Championships played at Prestatyn and Wrexham golf clubs last weekend attracted sixty nine players from all over the country sitting on handicaps from plus three up to five where last minute reserves had been called in to play. The whole event was played in excellent but breezy conditions in Prestatyn, with the concluding day at Wrexham supplying perfect golfing weather.

The links course at Prestatyn hosted the first thirty six holes of this seventy two holes event with Kevin Matthias of the Wrexham club posting the lowest morning score with a 69 against a standard scratch score of 74. He was closely followed by Jason Shufflebotham of Prestatyn with a 70 and Ben Enoch of Truro and James Frazer of Pennard on 71.

The afternoon round witnessed a 67 from Joe Vickery of Newport, with Ben Enoch and Oliver Farr of Ludlow both on 69. Jason and James Frazer added a 70 to each of their earlier rounds resulting in a tie on 140 for the thirty six holes Jubilee Trophy presented by Prestatyn Golf Club. This was resolved on a card play off which placed Ben Enoch with his 69 in first place and Jason second on 70.

Wrexham the next day for the second thirty six holes saw a seeded draw for the starting times with Enoch, Shufflebotham and James Frazer playing in the final three ball of the event. Enoch led with a 70 after fifty four holes and added an afternoon 68 for a total of 278. A thrilling final hole in which Shufflebotham was in the right hand trees of the eighteenth tee following his tee shot, and literally conjured up a magical shot through a small gap with a four iron and an eventual four, placed him in second position with 280 from Joe Vickery on the same numbers but a less good back nine holes, even though both he and Jason has shot gross 65’s that afternoon.

James Frazer was fourth with 283 and Andrew Bostock of the Wrexham club was fifth with 288.

Next Sunday Wrexham host the Denbighshire Golfing Union 6 – 16 and the 17 – 28 stroke play handicap Championships. Each over eighteen holes with the former as a medal and the latter as a Stableford.
