It is a generally accepted fact that Senior golfers, who qualify for that prestigious title by reaching the grand old age of fifty five, play more golf than any other category of membership in the majority of
U.K. affiliated golf clubs.
Speaking to many of the players in the final Seniors’ Open at Wrexham last Thursday in my capacity as starter, it was no surprise to hear from two visitors that this event was the twenty third Open that they had partnered each other in this season, and they still have four more to go before they are finished.
Indeed it has become something of a friendly joke that they are “on tour”, especially when they await the arrival of other club flyers into there own clubhouse so that they can arrange their assault on the competition programme for the forthcoming season.
Entry prices vary, but in general the season’s average provides a game of golf on a different course and a meal for about twelve pounds a head. Great value and it gets us out from underfoot for another day!
With a fairly full field last week the scoring was very good with the top three making forty four points and the next
two forty three. Winners were Phil Tunnah and Terry Hughes of the home club with a better back
nine score than Brian Leach and Reg Williams who in turn beat third placed Alec Lucas and Nev Dickens who plays out of the Vale of Llangollen Golf club. Highest placed visitors were G Adams and
N. Gannon of Astbury golf club with the better of the forty three point cards, the fifth placed card in the competition belonging to D J Roberts and Mike Norton of Wrexham.
Brian Davies and Fred Whitehead were in sixth place with forty two points, with the best gross of the day going to Ray Bennett and Tony McCann of Wrexham with a level par seventy.
Rapidly improving Chloe Williams, daughter of club professional Paul Williams, was in sparkling form in winning the Silver division of last Saturday’s Ladies’ medal. As a result of her 73 – 4 – 69 she is now off 3.5 handicap with
a reduction before the end of the year a fair certainty. Second in her group came Shelagh Jones with 92 – 19 – 73 followed by Janet Pritchard on 97 – 20 – 77 and Jo Nicolson on 79 – 2 – 77.
Jackie L. Williams returned 99 – 25 – 74 to win the Bronze division with Jane O’Sullivan second on 114 – 36 – 78 and then Janet Sharley with 112 – 28 – 84 occupying third place.
