The weather over the past seven days has done little for the ardent golfer other than have him or her sit indoors gazing through the window and thinking what might have been. I must admit that the projected storms of last Saturday did not quite materialize in the manner of the forecast, not at least in this immediate area, but it was sufficient to cancel last Saturday’s Canadian Greensome at Wrexham and have the event transferred to next weekend instead.
Courses restrict play for a number of reasons, fog was the featured nuisance in last week’s column, just as heavy rain causing standing water is this week’s problem, but frost has the longest time of influence over the length of time that courses are closed for play. In 1963, when Mr John Marwood was captain of Wrexham, he did not set foot on grass for eleven weeks such was the severity of the snow and frost, and the ground conditions of the day. These winters appear to be thing of the past, but I have a feeling that despite all the predictions regarding Global Warming we could all be in for a surprise before long.
The Wrexham club held their Junior medal last Sunday in an event that was played through two divisions. Winner of division one was Lewis Jones with 74 – 7 – 67 from second placed Alex Pugh, 74 – 5 – 69 and third placed Daniel Darlington with 80 – 12 – 78. Junior Captain, Sam Higgins was in fourth spot with 76 – 5 – 71 and Michael Peters fifth with 88 – 9 – 79.
The second division
featured a win for Jordan Williams on 91 – 28 – 63, earning himself a handicapreduction to 25. james Adamson was in second place with 92 – 27 – 65 to drop to 25 also whist Josh Underwood came in third place with 102 – 36 – 66 to lose four strokes from his handicap in one fell swoop. Louis Jones came fourth on 89 – 23 – 66 from fifth placed Jordan Billington who handed in
96 – 27 – 69.
The ladies played a nine holes “three clubs and a putter “ competition last Tuesday in an event that attracted slightly lower numbers than usual. Despite the weather which was very blustery with rain developing later, eighteen points by the winner, June Roberts, is usually a good score with a bag full of clubs, so well done. Second came Jo Davies with fourteen points to conclude the results of that event.
This evening the club hosts the annual Junior dinner in which all the junior officers and adults such as the Junior Organisers and the club Professional attend. Guest speaker is usually a senior member of the club, and on this occasion will be Past captain Ray Ledsham, with a further contribution from Emlyn Edwards.
