So much for the weather forecast!

The lines were abuzz last Friday evening between numerous social golfers who usually play on a Saturday morning. The Christmas Scramble at Wrexham ( more about that later) meant that our Saturday morning game had to be about forty minutes earlier than usual, in fact at about 8.20 a.m. to be exact.

The little drawings on the weather map on Friday evening were accompanied by a warning triangle with an exclamation mark enclosed and the legend “Frost and Fog” featured underneath in large capital letters. Bearing in mind that the Friday had been a course closed day at the club in lieu of the dense fog and very restricted visibility, we decided that we did not warrant a trip in vain, especially as one of our number lives in Ellesmere, and has a thirty minute drive beforehand.

Clear skies and milder temperatures greeted the opening bedroom curtains as Saturday proved to be lovely fresh morning, ideal for Christmas Shopping and writing the cards!

The aforementioned Christmas Scramble started out many years ago as a social golfing gathering for about twenty to thirty male members who also enjoyed a meal in the clubhouse at the end of play, and a tradition that every one who enters the event has a prize to go home with – nice idea.

So popular was the competition that a considerable amount of time was devoted to the match, all with the good will of the other members I hasten to add. As a consequence the event was adopted by the Fixtures secretary and entered into the Club Fixture Book as a featured event open to all.

I have now the need to retype the next two paragraphs because R Paul Williams presented the results in reverse order so that, as Chairman of Match and Handicap, he could pass comment as the presentation built up to a climax with the winners being announced last.

Winners in the Am Am format were Alan Merrill, Club Pro Paul Williams, Mike Norton and joint organizer Alan Rees whose idea it all was in the first place. They handed in 110 points which suggests that three cards were to count out of the four places. (or some other devious scoring method)

Second came David Stephen Jones, Steve McKevitt, Vice captain, Keith Miller, and Brian Hughes with 108 followed by Adrian Maddocks, Jamie Durkin, Simon Earl Huxley and Malcolm J Edwards with 106.

Fourth place on 105 belonged to Mike Jones, Richard Godbold, Phil Guest and   Bryn Edwards   whilst the quartet of Ashley Griffiths, C Jones, Steve Kavanagh and Mike Palmer   occupied fifth place with103.

Seventeen fourballs took part in the event, the lowest score being that of 85 points.

The ladies played a four ball betterball a week ago, the results just too late for last Friday’s Leader. Winners were Jo Davies with Janet Brunyee with 22 points followed by Carole Jones and Pauline Archer on 21.

This immediate past Tuesday was the occasion of the Christmas Canadian Greensome which was won by Caroann Jones and   Eileen Jackson with 17 points. Second came Mair Williams and Anne Roberts with 16. Twenty two pairs contested the event.
