As with many of the older established golf clubs in our area, the trophy cabinets display cups and salvers, shields and glassware in abundance as a result of events that are usually played in memory of prominent members of past years whose name has been associated with their trophy without too much present day knowledge of their origins.

Wrexham is no exception. Now in its one hundred and third year of operation it possesses trophies of great historical value which have been in the club almost since its inauguration. Indeed one cup, the Gresford Cup, was presented to Wrexham golf club when the course moved from the site of the Gresford colliery to Pandy, and then to Gwersyllt Park from where we moved in 1924 to our present home in Borras. The cup is the only trophy to bear names from prior to 1906 and is awarded to the leading handicap player in the match play rounds which take up to six months to play.

Finals’ Day was last Sunday and most of the trophies were contested on the day, the exception being certain events that had taken place during the year when the winners and runners up were required to present themselves in the clubhouse so that they could be formally presented with their award by the Captain of the day, Mr Tony Brunyee.

Traditionally the junior awards feature first with the R C Roberts cup being won by James Morgan with Rhodri Fieldhouse as runner up. Lewis Mackenzie won the Hilda Roberts trophy with Christopher Tym as runner up, whilst the F.D.Williams salver went to Daniel Lloyd from Daniel Darlington.

Chloe Williams won the Junior McAlpine trophy from Alex Pugh, and the Ted Clutton Memorial Trophy was won by Matthew Waters from Ryan Morley.

Jordan Williams retained the Graham Williams trophy presented in recognition of his grandfather Graham Williams, the Wrexham, Everton and Wales footballer.

Monica Jones won the Ladies Centenary Cup earlier in the year with Pamela Valentine as runner up. Pam partnered Selwyn Roberts to second place in the Derby Cups which were won by brother and sister team of Huw and Jackie Williams. Jackie featured very prominently this year as the winner of the Crowther Cup from Janet Brand as well as being runner up in the   Lambert Salver which was won earlier in the season by Jo Davies.

Sue Bannister won the Ladies McAlpine from Janet Brand in her second runner up place, and Steve Merrill and Jean Jones took the Whitley Salvers from Cliff and Monica Jones.

Phil Tunnah beat Bob Kane in the final of the Dougie Williams trophy and Wynn Jones won the Hospital Cup from Tony Phillips.

The Jim Wilding trophy was won by Dave Chadwick and John Williams from Colin E. Jones and Clive Griffiths

Colin Sharley and Mark Williams won the Shelley Tankards from Mike Hughes and Alan Harris with Jim Keenan beating Colin Hughes in the final of the Dr. Geoffrey Williams Cup.

The Gresford Cup was won by Jason Davies much to the delight of his grandfather, county, North Wales and Wales senior golfer R. Malcolm Edwards who watched the play. Daniel Read was the worthy runner up in this match.

Paul Lloyd took the Kenyon Cup from Mike Jones, leaving only the two major events of the day, the ladies’ and mens’ individual scratch championships for their respective club Championship trophies. After a thirty six holes tussle, Jo Nicolson won her tenth club ladies championship by beating Hazel Parry, and Andrew Bostock defeated Rhodri Fieldhouse in a closely fought mens’ final.

The presentation of all the trophies was made to a packed clubhouse immediately following the end of the mens’ championship.

The Ladies also played an eighteen holes Stableford event last Tuesday which witnessed a win for   Monica Jones and Janet Brunyee with 37 points, the best of three such cards which were ranked on a card play off. Runners up were Janet Lloyd and Jean Jones with Dorne Tym and J A Jones in third place.
