As if a magic wand had been waved over the Fixture lists, this week saw the commencement of the Turkey Trot Christmas Fayre events in almost all the clubs within our immediate catchment area. With preferred lies now in operation, and winter tasks well under way, the return of the turkey events certainly is a reminder that Christmas is not too far away.
Prior to all that activity though was the occasion of the annual match at between the Captain’s team and the Vice captain’s team last Saturday.
The list of participants is taken down from the notice board and then the two officers, Club Captain Keith Miller, and Vice Captain, John D. Williams, select each in turn from the list until the numbers are exhausted. Twenty eight players made up seven fourballs this year and the eventual winners by a narrow margin of four matches to three were the Vice Captain’s team. At the evening presentation the vice captain introduced a sports trivia quiz which proved most entertaining to all in attendance.
The following day witnessed a four ball better ball Medal event for teams of two. Winners of the event were Ray Bennett and Bill Taylor with net 63 from second placed Brian Hughes and Tim Jones on 64. Jamie Durkin and Steve McKevitt were in third place with the better of two 65 net scores, the other, in fourth position, belonging to Richard Godbold and Jim Davies.
The previous Wednesday saw father and son combination of Mike and Nick Verburg hand in 46 Stableford points to win the Christmas event for that day. Second came Bill Nicholls and Alan Rowlands with 44 followed by C McCabe and Mark Holdcroft with 42, a score replicated by fourth placed A I Jones and Mark Galloway.
Wrexham golf club members paid tribute to one of its most loyal members yesterday when we all attended the funeral service of David Chadwick who had been a very active member of the seniors’ section and a member of the club since 1997. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
We were also coming to terms with the loss of Miss Kath Davies who had just attained her ninetieth birthday and had been a member since the early 1950’s. A past Ladies’ captain and a regular visitor to the club on Tuesdays, ladies’ day, her circle of veteran lady friends will be sadly aware of her absence and will miss her greatly.
