Wrexham launched their Open week with, ironically, a closed competition for the Ladies’ Centenary Trophy and the Junior Centenary Trophy on the same day, namely Sunday.

Winner of the Ladies’ event was Monica Jones with 84 – 18 – 66 from Pam Valentine with 72 – 6 – 66. Both these scores represented an excellent standard of handicap golf and resulted in reductions for both players, Ms Valentine’s handicap being the responsibility of Royal St. David’s Golf Club where she is a first choice member.

Helen Milner was in third place with net 67 followed by Janet Lloyd on 68.

The Juinior Centenary event was won by Jamie Lloyd who won the concurrent June medal with his score of 74 – 10 – 64 and gaining an improvement of one stroke into single figures, now off nine. Runner up with his best score to date around Wrexham came Alex Pugh with an impressive 70 – 6 – 64, his handicap adjustment now being the responsibility of Mold golf club.

Jack Waters was the winner of the second division of the medal with 95 – 29 – 66 followed by Lewis Mackenzie on 110 – 40 – 70. Jessica Jones was leading junior lady with 79 – 7 – 72 from India Friswell on 81 – 9 – 72 and Chloe Williams with 78 – 5 – 73.

Mike Peters, Junior Vice Captain, returned an excellent 76 – 9 – 67 for third place in division one and he in turn was pursued by Thomas Williams with 80 – 12 – 68.

Open week was launched on Monday with an Am Am scoring Stableford for teams of four with any gender combination of players. A full field contested six prizes for the main event with a prize for the front and back nine holes bar the first six.

Winners from Northop, and apologies for no forenames in the distributed results, were D Jones, J Roberts, K Edwards and K Turner with 88 points. They won by a solitary point from a combination team from Northop and Wallasey which comprised John Price, John Percy, Dave Fox and Graham Scott who handed in 87 points.

The organizers had to go through the next two cards to the last three holes to award the third place to Chris Marsden, R Paul Williams, Graham Williams and David S. Jones with their 86 points, followed closely as indicated by fourth placed Stuart Fisher, Kevin Matthias, Adrian Maddox and Mark Fisher on the same numbers.

A.Jones, Richard Prandle, Keith Miller and A Roberts were fifth with a third 86 and a fourth 86 took the sixth prize for the team of Jackie Lloyd Williams, Gayle Elson, Andrea Vaughan Smith and Jane O’Sullivan.

The best front nine holes went to Nick Verburg, Brian Challoner, Joe Bell and Mike Jones with 46 points, a score replicated on the back nine for Brian Neale, Handel Williams, Hugh John and Barry Dickinson
