With more and more golf courses undergoing a tree planting regime for copses and fairway delineation, the down side seems to be the amount of leaves that this policy generates. This is the time of year when deciduous trees shed their leaves and golf balls become even harder to find than usual under the scattering of dead foliage alongside the fairways.
Most clubs have a sort of giant vacuum cleaner which tours around and sucks up the leaves, but this is only really effective when the leaves are dry, and that is not easy looking at the weather at the beginning of this week, but we do our best, so keep searching!
Our male members contested the October Wednesday medal earlier in the month in a competition played through four handicap divisions. Tony Darlington won the first division with 76 – 6 – 70 from Mark Garner on 78 – 6 – 72 and then Chris Marsden with 74 – 2 – 72. Ray Bennett was in fourth place with 78 – 6 – 72 with fifth placed Ian Davies repeating those numbers.
The second division went the way of Jamie Seddon with his return of 79 – 9 – 70 followed by Andrew Harrington on identical figures. Bob Blythen was in third place with 81 – 10 – 71 with Paul Hollingshead fourth on 83 – 12 – 71.
Steve Evans took the honours in division three with 83 – 17 – 66 followed by Derek Collis on 86 – 18 – 68 and Maldwyn Hughes with 88 – 18 – 70. Gwynn Evans was in fourth spot with 86 – 16 – 70.
The fourth division was won by veteran golfer Brian Bell with 94 – 20 – 74. He was followed by Terry Hughes with 94 – 19 – 75 and then Stan Roberts with 99 – 24 – 75. Steve Elson featured in fourth spot with 98 – 21 – 77.
Last weekend’s Better ball Stableford for Christmas prizes was won by the partnership of Colin Jones and Malcolm Edwards with 47 points from second placed Andy Wynne and Brian Moffett on 46. .S Pearson and K. Baines were third with 45 followed by brothers Ray and Steve Merrill on the same numbers.
Next Saturday features the annual match between teams selected by the Vice Captain and the Captain, an event which is followed by a meal in the clubhouse later.
