News 14th October 2009

One or two put the date as early as 1215 when King John signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede; a few suggested the year 1346 and the occasion of the Battle of Crecy when the English long bowmen put the French to rout, and a further group spoke of October 1805 and the Battle of Trafalgar as being nearer the last occasion when the Past captains of Wrexham beat the Captain’s team in the annual match between those two warring factions, but the hardy band of twenty four Past captains beat the Captain’s team by eight matches to four in what for us as Past captains of the club, was a day to remember.

Milking the occasion to the full at the evening meal, the individual results were acknowledged to the advantage of the Past Captains culminating in R. Paul Williams, the Match and Handicap chairman, playing for the Captains team, to humorously cover his head with his table napkin when his loss was announced.

We have twenty seven surviving past captains in the club with a further bank of about seven who were captains of other clubs before becoming Wrexham members. Of these gentlemen, we manage to field about twenty four each year for the captain of the day to number match them into four ball games. Club Captain Tony Brunyee pulled no punches and selected a strong team to represent his side, but early victories by the astutely matched past captains saw the game poised at 5 ½ to a ½ after only six matches had finished. Modesty forbids naming all the victorious past captains, but Oscar Jones’s second shot out of the trees on the ninth bears a mention, especially as the ball was lodged some seven feet off the ground.
